Cascades announces closure of two tissue paper machines located in the Greater Toronto Area

Cascades Inc. (TSX : CAS), a leader in the recovery and manufacturing of green packaging and tissue products, announces the definitive closure of its tissue paper machines located in Whitby and Scarborough (Progress Avenue) in Ontario .

The leases for these two plants expire on August 27, 2019 and will not be renewed. The end date of the production remains to be determined. In total, the sites produce 44,000 tonnes of tissue paper annually and employ 68 workers.

"Today, we are announcing the closure of two paper machines in Ontario . Their unprofitability and the current market conditions have convinced us that it is better to source externally to supply our needs. It is important to note that this decision will have no impact on our ability to serve our customers, "said Jean Jobin , President and Chief Operating Officer of Cascades Tissue Group.

Over the coming months, the company will try to relocate as many of its employees as possible to its other business units located in the region. Those employees who cannot or do not wish to be reassigned to the Company’s other factories will be accompanied in their efforts to find new employment.

Cascades sincerely thanks its employees for their loyalty, dedication and commitment to an orderly closure of the Whitby and Scarborough operations, and will work with them to minimize the impact of these closures.

A.Celli to supply two IRIDIUM® printing machines in China

Among other features, the A.Celli IRIDIUM® mod. 8105 is equipped with the new A.Celli Nexus® film re-winder, patented by A.Celli Nonwovens, allowing the automatic alignment of the multi slitting and core device with the printing path, this solution minimizes the set up time and waste during the start up.

The patented splice device, installed on A.Celli Nexus® film re-winder, allows optimize splice without tape and reduce to zero the waste during the doffing cycle.

In addition, the machine incorporates quick job changes, automatic fast job set up, an automatic washing system, 100% video camera that includes quality control and dynamic repeat length adjustment and controls that reduce waste due to inhomogeneous material.

A.Celli IRIDIUM® mod. 8105 drying system is designed to improve environmental protection and energy savings, and can switch from solvent-based to water-based inks to meet the trend of green production and zero VOC emission.

Maintenance is easier and more accessible, as the machine incorporates an automatic CI washing system and it is possible to disassemble the drying boxes from the side for cleaning.

The Platform for Industry 4.0, developed by EXTREME AUTOMATION, includes information such as daily job tasks, printing job length completed and roll printed, machine down time, and it enables the implementation of remote troubleshooting, a wide range of predictive maintenance programmes and e-service which improve the uptime.

Diogo da Silveira leaves the Navigator Company

The Portuguese pulp and paper producer The Navigator will change its CEO, since Diogo da Silveira "has expressed a desire not to be reelected for a new term.
The manager understands that "the mandate that was defined to him in 2014 in the direction of the rejuvenation and diversification of the Navigator has now been successfully completed", and will cease to function on the day of the annual general meeting, which is already scheduled for April 9.
After that, and until a new CEO is chosen, it will be João Castello Branco to lead the executive committee of Navigator. João Castello Branco is the current "chairman" of Navigator, a position he assumed after the death of Pedro Queiroz Pereira.

Diogo da Silveira assumed the executive presidency of then Portucel in 2014, succeeding José Honório, who had been one of the right arms of Queiroz Pereira and who left the company after 25 years.

Double E Welcomes Joshua Paul as Vice President of Sales

Double E is excited to announce the hire of Joshua Paul as their new Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Joshua will be responsible for the growth of the complete Double E portfolio including the Double E, Appleton, and Convertech product lines.

Josh brings over 12 years of experience in engineered technical product sales and leadership roles. Most recently, Josh was the Commercial Director for Koch Membrane Systems, a Koch Industries company. Prior to working for Koch, Josh was the North American Sales Manager for Pentair’s Engineered Filtration business. Josh’s experience growing new and existing markets with both end-users and through OEM’s will bode well in working to expand Double E’s installed base throughout the US and beyond.

Joshua is a graduate of the University of Connecticut. Originally from Simsbury, CT, Josh now resides in Boston, MA with his wife Alexandra.

International exhibitors present innovative technologies and products for the corrugated and folding carton industry

From 12 – 14 March 2019, the international corrugated and folding carton industry will get together for the 4th edition of the specialised trade fair CCE International at the Munich Trade Fair Centre in Germany. On a total of 5,000 m2 net exhibition space, 155 exhibitors from 23 countries will present raw materials, machinery, accessories and services for the production and conversion of corrugated and cartonboard, covering the entire production chain. Live demonstrations at the exhibitor stands will give insights into the range of technological developments and current innovations. Evolution of the Safeguard procedure of Sequana

The Commercial Court of Nanterre had decided to extend the observation period opened in the context of the safeguard procedure in favour of Sequana until 17 May 2019 and the company had to file a new sauvegarde plan by this date.
At the initiative of the Administrator (administrateur judiciaire) and the creditors’ representative (mandataire judiciaire) of Sequana a petition has been filed with the Commercial Court of Nanterre in order to turn its safeguard procedure (sauvegarde) into a receivership procedure (redressement judiciaire).
This request is based on the inability for Sequana, following the decision handed down by the Court of Appeal in London in the litigation between Sequana and the BAT Industries plc Group, to file a sauvegarde plan enabling it to pay off the debts taken into consideration and to finance the observation period pending the decision of the Supreme Court in England which, subject to Sequana being permitted to appeal, will likely not be handed down before a minimum 13 months’ time-limit.
The Commercial Court of Nanterre should hand down its decision within the next 15 days. In this context, Sequana has requested Euronext Paris to suspend trading of its shares on the Paris Stock Exchange.
The Company will keep informed the market as soon as the Commercial Court decision is known.
Furthermore, in the proceedings opened in favour of some of the French Arjowiggins companies, the Commercial Court of Nanterre has decided today to postpone for a fortnight its decision regarding the offers made by potential buyers in order to allow the best industrial, financial and employment solutions to be found.

Valmet strengthens its wastewater automation business in Norway by signing a distributor agreement with Endress+Hauser

Valmet has extended the cooperation with Endress+Hauser by signing a distributor agreement for wastewater automation. Valmet’s target is to strengthen and expand its wastewater business in Norway and help the wastewater industry to improve and optimize its processes.

According to the agreement, Valmet provides its advanced wastewater automation and measurement technology, while Endress+Hauser is responsible for sales, engineering and services in Norway. Valmet and Endress+Hauser already have similar agreements regarding wastewater business in Finland, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Beneficial collaboration with a strategic approach

Endress+Hauser has long experience of the business environment and wastewater industry in Norway. Together with Valmet’s strong automation expertise and advanced technology, the companies can develop wastewater automation and measurement business forward.

Kimberly-Clark Announces Nomination of Todd Maclin and Dunia Shive to Board of Directors

Kimberly-Clark Corporation announced that S. Todd Maclin and Dunia A. Shive have been nominated for election to its Board of Directors at the company’s 2019 Annual Meeting of Shareholders on May 2, 2019. Current board members John F. Bergstrom and James M. Jenness will be retiring in 2019.

Mr. Maclin had a 37-year career at JPMorgan Chase & Co. and its predecessor banks, where he rose to Chairman of Chase Commercial and Consumer Banking in 2013 and served on the company’s Operating Committee. Mr. Maclin currently serves on The University of Texas Development Board, the Advisory Council for McCombs Graduate School of Business, the Executive Committee of The University of Texas Chancellor’s Council, the board of visitors of UT Southwestern Health System, the Steering Committee for the O’Donnell Brain Institute for UT Southwestern, and the board of Southwestern Medical Foundation and a member of its Investment Committee. Ms. Shive brings extensive media experience from her background as Senior Vice President of TEGNA Inc., formerly Gannett Co., Inc., a broadcast and digital media company, from 2013 to 2017. She previously served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Belo Corp. from 2008 to 2013, which was acquired by Gannett in 2013. She joined Belo Corp. in 1993 and served as Chief Financial Officer and various other leadership positions prior to her election as President and Chief Executive Officer. Nippon Paper Industries Constructs a New Manufacturing Facility for Highly Functional Cellulose at the Gotsu Mill Strengthening Brands for Food and Lithium Ion Batteries

Nippon Paper Industries Co., Ltd. announces the construction of a new facility for the functional cellulose product carboxymethyl cellulose at the Gotsu Mill (Gotsu City, Shimane Prefecture). Nippon Paper Industries will invest approximately 4.7 billion yen into this facility, which is planned to be completed in November 2020. Upon this construction, Nippon Paper Industries will re-establish a CMC production system and work toward a shift to high-value-added and high-quality fields such as special brands for food and lithium ion batteries developed with its unique technologies.

CMC is an anionic, water-soluble polymer that is derived from wood cellulose. Because it is derived from wood, it offers slow biodegradability and is also known as an eco-friendly material. Since it features outstanding adherence, water absorption and water retention, it is widely used for food, hygiene and industrial applications. Recently, applications for lithium ion batteries are increasing and future growth is expected.

Nippon Paper Industries has experience with manufacturing products derived from wood such as dissolving pulp and functional chemicals at Gotsu Mill, which is its main factory in our chemical business. In September 2017, it launched a cellulose nanofiber mass-production facilty as a new member of the CMC lineup. With this increase in production capacity, Nippon Paper Industries will work to strengthen the foundations of the business, aiming for further expansion as a comprehensive biomass company shaping the future with trees.

Canfor closes VIDA Group of Sweden Acquisition

Canfor Corporation, further to the Company’s news release dated November 15, 2018, announces that it has completed the purchase of 70% of the Vida Group of Sweden for a purchase price of 3,990 million Swedish Krona (approximately CAD$580 million).

Arjowiggins: the Nanterre Commercial Court grants a two-week deadline ; Three offers from Wepa, Fripa and Mondi to take over Greenfield

The Nanterre Commercial Court has granted a two-week delay in the French Arjowiggins (Bessé-sur-Braye, Le Bourray and Greenfield) plants takeover case. The examination of the tenders is thus postponed to Wednesday, March 20th at 9 o’clock.
The Lessebo Paper group has submitted a takeover bid for the three sites, but this offer entails an investment of € 33 million by the Swedish group and of € 32 million by public funds. About two-thirds of jobs would be preserved. The Lessebo project must be specified, in particular concerning the Bessé facility.
Meanwhile, an offer was submitted by CGMP (a tissue converter) for the takeover of the Bourray plant.
As for the Greenfield deinked pulp mill, it sparked three offers. On the one hand, that of the German tissue producter Wepa (this company already owns two tissue paper factories in France). On the other hand, that of Fripa, another German producer of tissue. Finally, the South African group Mondi has also submitted an offer.

Södra named as a finalist in PPI awards

We are delighted to have been nominated as a finalist in the PPI Awards for the Marketing Campaign of the Year. The winner will be announced at the awards ceremony in Vienna on 12 March.

Video views number more than 815,000 so far. The campaign continues and following these results, we’re also looking at expanding the hero campaign concept into other business areas within Södra.”

Amerplast and Metsä Tissue’s Serla partnering to promote circular economy

Transition to Circular Economy is a necessity when we wish to create a better and more sustainable future for our children and the generations to come. We need to make the most of our limited resources and work together against climate change. Amerplast and Metsä Tissue’s Serla brand are partnering to introduce the first Circular Economy Tissue Packaging to the market.

Amerplast’s ESSI Kiertokääre is a circular economy packaging concept that utilizes recycled plastic from industrial sources and post-consumer recycled plastic packaging separately collected from Finnish households. According to Amerplast research the use of recycled raw materials decreases the environmental effects of packaging and also the need for virgin raw materials.

What makes Serla’s Green Pack packaging unique is not only the use of recycled materials. The packaging is a combination of both the ESSI Kiertokääre concept and biobased Green PE polyethylene. Green PE is produced using ethanol, a by-product in sugar production. It contains no fossil raw materials and can be recycled in existing recycling streams. Sugar cane is a 100% renewable and carbon dioxide depleting resource. It removes up to 2.15 metric tons of CO2 from the atmosphere for each ton produced, from cradle to the supplier Braskem’s gate (source : LCA study by E4tech & LCA Works). After use, the Green Pack packaging is fully recyclable through existing recycling streams as raw material for new tissue packaging.

Recently, emtec has introduced a new test method, which enables the measurement of the influence of different fiber mixes (long and short fiber ratio) to the quality of the hand sheet. With a special hand sheet
preparation procedure and a technical upgrade on the original TSA it is possible to predict the final product quality in the lab without expensive trials at the tissue machine.
Emtec would also like to announce that at the beginning of this year, the 300th TSA has been sold. The device is now used in 48 countries, in each part of the world.
Along with the TSA, emtec will display the CAS touch ! and FPA touch ! Both instruments help to get information about the efficiency of the chemicals, which are added to the pulp suspension during the tissue production. They are used to measure the interaction between additives and chemicals with the particles or fibers in the pulp in order to stabilize the process, to improve the product quality and to reduce costs.

Sulzer and Tamturbo join forces in high-speed compression

Sulzer and Tamturbo will together bring the benefits of high-speed technology in air compression to customers that need intrinsically safe oil-free air. The target is to replace existing technologies such as oil-free screw compressors in these applications. The global agreement between the companies covers sales to all industries, focusing on Sulzer’s key industries such as pulp and paper, food, metals, mining and chemical processing.

Sulzer has used high-speed technology in its products for more than 20 years. The HST™ turbo compressor is the market leader in low-pressure compression e.g. in wastewater treatment applications. With this cooperation, Sulzer is tapping into a similar technological transformation in industrial air compression that happened in the low-pressure blower market from 1996 onwards.

Tamturbo as a company focuses on the industrial oil-free compressed air market. The high-efficiency turbo compressors developed and manufactured by Tamturbo produce oil-free air that does not contaminate the product. Arjowiggins: Tribunal decision expected today

Some 250 employees of Arjowiggins were present yesterday at the Commercial Court of Nanterre (near Paris), where the future of the three factories in receivership was discussed.
The Swedish company Lessebo, the only candidate to take over the three Arjowiggins Graphic factories where more than 900 people are employed, defended its project in court. Three other offers were filed for the Greenfield facillity in Château-Thierry (Aisne), and a fourth for the Bourray site (Sarthe). The court must decide today to give a delay – 2 weeks maybe – that would allow Lessebo to consolidate its offer. This offer would however require a contribution of 33 M€ from Lessebo in equity and capitalization and a commitment from the State of 32 M€. The Commercial Court could also opt for the other candidates and declare a liquidation.

Segezha Group to Design a Large Biotechnological Complex in Krasnoyarsk Krai

Segezha Group, a forest industry enterprise (part of Sistema JSFC), has been working on designing documentation for construction of a new biotechnological complex in Siberia. This project represents a modern high-tech manufacturing facility with a single (switchable) pulp line with the annual capacity of 0.7 mln tons of bleached softwood and/or hardwood sulfate pulp.

The concept of a new plant designed at the industrial site of Lesosibirsky LDK No. 1 operating within Segezha Group is based on using 100% wood raw material and arranging by-product operational flows for pulp production and a wide range of other bioproducts as substitutes of fossil materials and fuel. The company plans to invest some RUB100 billion in the pulp and paper production project. The new enterprise will help create more than 460 new jobs for the region.

Construction of the facility will take 3 years. The project starting date will be defined to include the time required to undergo a state expert assessments and obtain licenses. In 2019-2020 Segezha Group will complete a wide range of procedures : the environmental impact assessment procedure, get its sanitary protection zone projects approved, approve the deployment of the facility by the Federal Agency for Fishery, State Environmental Expert Assessment Authority, the Main State Expert Review Board, and obtain a construction permit.

“We have been moving along at a brisk pace. This year we plan to complete all the necessary certifications,” said Mikhail Shamolin, President of Segezha Group. “When this is done, we will be able to say that the project is attractive enough from the economic point of view, and it will not be a problem to find investors.”

According to the head of the company, today pulp and paper mills are still stereotypically viewed as hazardous enterprises that pollute the environment and produce malodorous pollutants. This can be explained, Mr. Shamolin says, by the fact that all Russian PPMs had been built back in the Soviet time. Since that time, he continues, technologies have come a very long way.

“Modern pulp mills, like those built in Finland and Sweden, for example, are rather biotechnological complexes based on a zero-waste principle. These mills are environmentally friendly,” Mikhail Shamolin stated. As an example he mentioned the Finnish mill of theMetsä Group*. It is located within city limits, and is safe for the environment and local residents. “This will signify a new step in development of the global pulp and paper industry. The enterprises in Europe have already completed this step, and we think that we should have such an enterprise in this country as well,” President of Segezha Group said.

One of strategic advantages of the future biotechnological complex to be built in Russia is a lower cost of raw materials and higher energy efficiency of production. Krasnoyarsk Krai has enough high-quality raw materials to implement the project. The region occupies the second place nationwide in terms of softwood stock, with the periodic yield of 76 mln.

The total demand for forest resources within the project is 3.5 mln m3. Segezha Group forest base in Krasnoyarsk Krai is 2.8 mln m3, which will allow accumulating up to 60% of its own forest resources to provide a new mill with high-class forest raw materials. The company plans to cover the remaining demand with external supplies of wood chips at neighboring sawmill plants and external supplies of paper wood.

Yeniseysky District of Krasnoyarsk Krai has good transport accessibility (the company has already been offered to ship 20,000 containers via the Northern Sea Route) and close proximity to key sales markets.

The target sales markets for future products include countries of Southeast Asia, including China, where pine fiber is in short supply. For the record, the global market of bleached softwood pulp is capacious and growing (CAGR consumption through 2030 is 1.7%).

Students create packaging of the future in annual design competition PIDA arranged by BillerudKorsnäs

What will a sustainable and exciting packaging concept look like in 2030 ? Most likely we will see many and innovative answers to that question at PIDA (Packaging Impact Design Award), the international design competition arranged and hosted by BillerudKorsnäs. In this year’s edition of PIDA, the brief encourages the participating students to gaze into the future and create an innovative, functional and sustainable packaging concept to solve a problem of the future.

“We have to start today if we want to find tomorrow’s solutions. Change doesn’t happen overnight. Design for the future means to stop and think, question the way things are, identify problems and go to work to change things for the better. Bring the Future

Consumers of today demand more of a package than ever. They expect less plastic, unique design and sustainable solutions. 72% of all consumers say they are willing to pay more for a product packed in a sustainable way, according to a BillerudKorsnäs 2017 survey. The theme for this year’s PIDA is Bring the Future and the key word is “sustainability”. “A theme this broad gives the students ample possibilities to go their own way. They can fantasize about future scenarios that they are able to imagine. We hope to see innovative concepts that will give us new food for thought.”

Selecting an international winner

The Swedish part of PIDA will be held on 22 May in Stockholm. Here, students from Germany will participate as well. PIDA France will be held on 16 June in Reims. For the first time this year, UK students have their own PIDA event – in Sheffield on 4 June. And also for the first time, an international PIDA winner will be selected at the luxury packaging show Luxe Pack in Monaco on 30 September.

“We have arranged PIDA for many years now, with a similar setup over a long time. We want to take the competition to a new level. This way we can give the students an even greater incentive and introduce their design projects to a wider audience,” says Johanna Oderstad.

DS Smith Plc – Sale of Plastics Division and Trading Update

Sale of Plastics division for $585 million
DS Smith is pleased to announce it has reached agreement to sell the Plastics division to Olympus Partners for an enterprise value of $585 million, (approximately £450 million). This represents a multiple of 9.9x EBITDA based on the past 12 months to 31 October 2018. The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions including regulatory approvals, with completion expected to take place in the second half of this calendar year. We expect net cash proceeds after taxation, transaction adjustments and expenses of approximately £400 million.
The Plastics division comprises the plastics operations of DS Smith, including flexible plastics, rigid plastics and foam products. Gross assets of the business as at 31 October 2018 were £223 million and profit before tax for the 12 month period to 31 October 2018 was £28 million.
This sale represents an important step in DS Smith’s continued progress as a leader in sustainable packaging and accelerates the programme of deleveraging, alongside organic cashflow. The cash proceeds are expected to be used to reduce the financial gearing of DS Smith plc, in line with our medium-term target of net debt / EBITDA at or below 2.0x. The sale is expected to result in a substantial exceptional gain and be marginally EPS dilutive.
Trading update
In the period since 1 November 2018, trading has continued to be strong, in line with our expectations. We continue to see good corrugated box volume growth with continued market share gains driven by the quality of our offering to large and e-commerce customers and our FMCG -weighted customer base. The Christmas period was especially busy for our e-commerce focussed customers with our sector leading offering supporting our customers over this critical period.
Our US business continues to perform well with strong margins and returns ahead of our acquisition case. Group margins are expected to progress further in the second half of our financial year and operating cashflow generation is stronger than in the comparable period last year.
Update on Europac
The acquisition of Europac completed on 22 January 2019. We are delighted to welcome our new colleagues to the business and are very pleased with the initial progress on integration and the customer reaction so far.

High scores for Södra’s nature conservation

The positive results for Södra’s consideration follow-ups have continued, according to the company’s Green Balance Sheet report. Both regeneration harvests and thinning operations have maintained continued high levels despite a year of extraordinary weather conditions. At the same time, the concentration of considerations has reached new heights with a result of 98 percent for approved sites, the highest score to date.

2018 was a year characterised by extraordinary weather conditions that made forestry operations difficult due to long periods of heavy precipitation and extreme drought. Nonetheless, Södra’s nature conservation considerations received a high score with 94 percent of the regeneration harvests* and 93 percent of the thinning operations receiving approval.

“It is especially gratifying to see such a high percentage of approved objects considering the conditions we were working under. We have been working systematically with nature conservation activities for more than 20 years. In times like these, it is uplifting to see how that experience has generated results for both production and nature conservation,” said Klara Joelsson, ecologist, Södra.

One aspect monitored in the Green Balance Sheet is the concentration of considerations. Since 2010, the rate of approved sites in this regard has risen steadily – from 80 percent to 98 percent in 2018, the best result to date.

“Södra works actively, where possible, to concentrate nature conservation considerations to specific sites, and this has generated results. By concentrating nature conservation considerations, we can maximise both nature conservation benefits and the production potential. Many species benefit more when trees are left in groups rather than spreading them out across a harvesting area,” said Klara Joelsson.

*A harvesting method that removes nearly all mature trees to make room for a new generation of trees from natural regeneration or planting.

UPM begins the transplantation of threatened species in a unique biodiversity project

This spring, UPM will begin a transplantation project of rare and threatened wood-inhabiting fungi in co-operation with Natural Resources Institute Finland and the University of Helsinki. The aim of the project is to accelerate the reintroduction of species inhabiting deadwood to forests by planting these fungi to deadwood concentrations in the company forests. The project advances UPM’s target to improve the biodiversity of the company forests in Finland. Increasing deadwood is a key method for achieving this target.

"This is a completely new and a globally unique way to protect biodiversity", says Timo Lehesvirta, Sustainable Forestry Lead at UPM. Volume of decaying wood is the biggest difference affecting to forest species between sites reserved for wood production and natural forests. A quarter, i.e. approximately 5000, of forest species in Finland live on deadwood. Most of them are fungi and insect species. "The mycelia of fungi are grown in petri dishes. The mycelia are transplanted onto wooden pegs planted during the growing season to naturally developed deadwood and to deadwood made for the project", says Timo Lehesvirta.

"From a researcher’s point of view, new scientific knowledge on threatened species and fungal communities and practical nature conservation work are combined in a great way in this project. It’s rewarding to cooperate with a forestry company. We are looking forward to this project to proceed. The results obtained during the preliminary study are promising," says Reijo Penttilä, Project Manager and Research Scientist at Natural Resources Institute Finland.

The plantations consist of mycelia from more than 20 fungi species in total. Planted species include Amylocystis lapponica, Antrodia crassa and Haploporus odorus. The aim is to make the mycelia grow in deadwood trunks and later produce fruitbodies that release spores that start to germinate on new deadwood trunks. The spreading of mycelia in the trunk as well as accompanying species will be monitored with DNA analyses, and the incidences of fruitbodies with forest inventories.

"The polypores being transplanted in this project have become threatened, because suitable habitats - forests with high deadwood volumes - are rare. WWF aims to stop biodiversity loss of forests. We find this project interesting from that point of view", says Liisa Rohweder, Secretary General at WWF Finland.

"It is great to be part of creating completely new ways of protecting the biodiversity of forest nature. Measurements indicate that the amount of deadwood is increasing in UPM’s forests. Innovations, signs of positive effects and active collaboration with the most talented experts provide motivation for developing our operations to reach a common goal", concludes Timo Lehesvirta.

Smurfit Kappa drives down CO2 emissions by creating innovative steam system

Smurfit Kappa Roermond Paper Mill’s integrated steam system has been held up as a shining example of sustainability for reducing its CO2 footprint by a further 3% in 2018. The steam project is part of an ongoing intensive energy and CO2 reduction programme at the mill which has achieved a specific CO2 emission reduction of 23% since 2005.

The Roermond Paper Mill runs three paper machines to produce recycled paper for corrugated packaging. Under the previous configuration, the residual steam of two of the machines was only partially reused. As part of the mill’s ongoing project to reduce carbon emissions, it integrated the steam systems from all three paper machines by incorporating a sophisticated control system. The machines operate at different speeds using a variety of paper weights which added to the complexity of the task.

Speaking about the innovative steam system, Wim Janssen, Energy and Production Technologist at the mill, said : “We started by carrying out an in-depth analysis of processes to figure out a way to reuse excess steam from two of the machines in the third machine. This has reduced the mill’s gas consumption and slashed the 2018 CO2 emissions by an impressive 4,500 tonnes.”

Wouter Lap, MD of the Roermond Paper Mill, added : “What started as a pilot project has resulted in a modification of the mill’s steam system. At Smurfit Kappa we believe that the best ideas come from collaboration, creativity and being prepared to view our processes from different perspectives.

“This is a further example of how the Roermond Paper Mill is leading the paper industry in sustainable energy consumption.”

WestRock Named One of 12 Winners of NextGen Cup Challenge

WestRock, the US-based provider of differentiated paper and packaging solutions, announced that its prototype of a recyclable fiber-based cup for hot and cold applications was named one of 12 winners of the NextGen Cup Challenge.

Sponsored by the NextGen Consortium, a multi-year partnership of foodservice industry leaders, the NextGen Cup Challenge was launched to identify solutions to reduce the waste generated by more than 250 billion fiber-based cups produced every year. More than 480 submissions from 53 countries and territories were submitted. Winners represent the most innovative solutions across three distinct categories : innovative cup liners, new materials and reusable cup service models.

WestRock was recognized in the innovative cup liner category for its circular cup, a recyclable and compostable paperboard solution for a hot or cold beverage cup. The cup is being designed to consistently hold hot and cold beverages under a variety of conditions while being easily recyclable, ideally back into paper mills as post-consumer fiber where it can be made into new cups. The cup has also recently passed compostability testing with the Compost Manufacturing Alliance.

UPM paid EUR 62 million as incentives to employees in 2018

In a press release issued last week, UPM declares having paid a total of EUR 62 million as short-term incentives to employees in 2018. The incentives were paid for the good 2017 results. Over the last four years, the sum has been EUR 60 million per year on average.

UPM’s incentive schemes brought on average an additional 6.7% of annual income globally to personnel in the 46 countries of operations. At the end of 2018, UPM had 18,978 employees. The incentives are determined by the financial indicators, of which EBITDA is the most important and at least one-third of the incentive is determined by the achievement of personal and/or team performance targets.

The group-wide incentive scheme ensures that the employees receive their share of good results. UPM’s Board of Directors decides on the incentive scheme annually. The bonus system is voluntary and a way to encourage personnel for high performance.

For more than 10 years, all UPM employees in all professional groups and all organisations have belonged to a unified annual Short Term Incentive (STI) scheme, which is evaluated annually.

Stora Enso ranked the best in a new diversity comparison in Finland

Stora Enso received the highest scores in the FINDIX report, which was published for the first time today. The study examined the diversity of 89 Finnish companies through five different variables. These include gender distribution, age distribution, international background, educational background and industry-specific background of management teams and board of directors. The variables are based on the Finnish Securities Market Association’s corporate governance code, where they are highlighted as factors promoting diversity.

Impact of autohydrolysis on wood components and on pure cellulose production

Hélène Curmi defended her doctoral thesis of the University Grenoble Alpes - prepared under the supervision of the Professor Christine Chirat and the Professor Emeritus Dominique Lachenal (Grenoble INP-Pagora/LGP2). She presented the results of her research work entitled Study of the impact of autohydrolysis on wood components and on delignification processes to produce pure cellulose.

This study is a part of a large project which aim is to convert a pulp mill into a fully integrated biorefinery by adding an autohydrolysis step to remove and valorize hemicelluloses prior to cooking.

This thesis’s goal is to study the impact of adding an autohydrolysis step on wood components and on the subsequent delignification and bleaching processes applied to this wood to produce pure cellulose. Wood components were analyzed before and after autohydrolysis. In particular it was shown that autohydrolysis increases the amount of free phenolic groups, and lowers the involvement of lignin in lignin carbohydrates complexes. A new NMR method using Dynamic Nuclear Polarization was performed directly on milled wood to look at wood components structure without extraction’s steps to avoid chemical modifications.

The second part describes the test of pulp processes (alkaline cooking, oxygen delignification and bleaching) on autohydrolysed wood chips. It showed that the addition of this autohydrolysis step improves delignification during cooking to such an extent that soda cooking alone is possible and efficient. Oxygen delignification was also improved. Two bleaching sequences with or without chlorinated compounds (ECF and TCF) were applied and compared, and it was concluded that sustainable bleaching without any chlorinated reagents is feasible. Finally, evaluation of bleached pulp properties demonstrated that viscose application can be targeted. Indeed, pulp had high purity cellulose content, adequate polymerization degree and high brightness and brightness stability.

On all three days of the exhibition, visitors will have the opportunity to receive further training on the following key topics : Paper Industry 4.0, Bioeconomy and Paper, Consumers & Consumption 4.0, among others with a lecture by Ulf Tillmann from IKEA on "IKEA packaging material fibre strategy".

A special highlight will be Charles Bahr’s keynote speech entitled "Generation Z enters the labour market : how to reach teenagers sustainably". The talk will be held in German. Charles Bahr is the founder of tubeconnect, a marketing agency that helps clients develop successful advertising formats for Generation Z.

In the best-practice lecture series "Learn from the best", exhibitors present interesting developments that they have already implemented in practice.

Due to the high demand last year, the Science Flash will take place again in 2019, which will provide young scientists from various universities with an innovative insight into their scientific work.

Networking Events

The established evening events "After Fair" on the first day of the exhibition and "Summer Evening" by the association ZELLCHEMING e.V. on the second evening, offer participants the opportunity to continue their discussions in a relaxed atmosphere outside of the exhibition grounds. The “Summer Evening” will be held under the motto "Skyline Party" at the Alex Frankfurt in the Skyline Plaza with an impressive view over the rooftops of Frankfurt.

This year, a Women4Paper Day will be offered for women in the industry to expand their network. The session will feature a power breakfast and an inspiring keynote lecture.

Office paper to improve productivity? An opinion letter from APP

At PaperFIRST we believe in paper, first. Therefore we reproduce here an opinion letter submitted by Liz Wilks, Sustainability Manager for Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) Europe, on how the use of paper can be salutary and beneficial in a stressing workplace environment, and the need for producers to insist on the sustainability of their products to meet their customers’ expectations.

The question of whether screen-time is damaging to our health continues to be hotly debated. Earlier this year University College London and the BMJ Open Medical Journal issued a review of evidence which showed that while there is little proof that screen use can be described as ‘toxic’ to our health, there are clear associations between higher screen use and both obesity and depression.

It seems that in their quest for improved efficiency, businesses have become distracted by new technology, and forgotten that wellbeing is also a crucial part of solving the productivity puzzle.

Research by Deloitte into how workplaces can be designed to achieve digital well-being, shows that the ‘always on’ culture that the advent of technology has brought with it has had a detrimental impact on our efficiency. Technology has eliminated the need for natural breaks during the workday, compromising our ability to maintain attention, and designers have created products that are so focused on prompting us into action, these very same devices are also highly addictive. The constant interruptions provided by notifications spur us to work more quickly and switch tasks rapidly, but also less efficiently due to the constant distractions.

There is a robust body of evidence that taking regular breaks from work improves productivity, but when it comes to screen-time there are even more compelling health benefits. Unison, the UK’s largest public service union, recommends a 5-10 minute screen break or change of activity every hour and BUPA recommends regularly moving away from your computer to avoid ‘computer vision syndrome’.

The answer to this challenge of course lies in balance. Technology has transformed our lives in many fantastic ways, but traditional forms of working should still play a central role. A whitepaper from the University of Nottingham has shown that a pen and paper can encourage creativity with the physical movements involved in writing by hand stimulating children’s brains to a greater degree than typing letters. There is also some evidence to suggest that the process of learning to write has an effect on children’s ability to learn to read. What’s more, the paper refers to a study which shows that college students that took notes in lectures via handwriting could recall more about the lecture than those that took notes on their laptops.

Businesses are rightly challenging themselves to become more sustainable and are increasingly looking to ensure that the paper products meet these challenges too. Significant innovations in the recyclability of paper products should help businesses to reconcile this need.

Of course, it is also important for paper manufacturers to consider the impact of production, as well as the sustainability of the end product. APP’s Sustainability Roadmap Vision 2020, which sets out ambitious targets to improve forest conservation, has come a long way since its introduction in 2012. The vision outlines commitments under 10 key pillars : Climate change, emissions, solid waste, reforestation, conservation & biodiversity, human rights & indigenous people, community empowerment, employee welfare, fibre sourcing and water management. APP has worked with stakeholders including Greenpeace and the Rainforest Alliance to improve the various programmes in place and to track its progress against these goals.

The rise of technology has fundamentally changed the way in which we work, not only in the workplace but also in paper sourcing and production, particularly for APP. Technology in the workplace specifically is allowing us the flexibility to work anywhere and be available 24/7. But there are clear advantages associated with maintaining balance between this and traditional use of paper. With such products still very much in demand and as paper products become more sustainable, we have to question whether paper in the workplace is really declining ? The challenge is, how do businesses strike the balance between a tech-enabled workforce, and employees that are healthy, creative and ultimately, as productive as they can be.

Pasaban supplies a new carton board sheeter for the Pyroll Converting Group in Siltakyla Service Centre

If there is one name that stands out in the European paper and carton board converting sector it is the Pyroll Converting Group, which has a sheeting capacity over 400.000 tonnes totally in five of its service centers.

At Pasaban we are proud to have been designing and manufacturing machines for its converting plant for more than twenty years. In this new project we have provided a highly automated and extremely flexible machine in order to increase the production of high-quality coated and uncoated carton board.

The KB 2300 carton board sheeter is designed for plants with high-demanding production requirements. It has the capacity to process any type of cardboard with a grammage range of between 180 and 450 gsm at an operating speed of 350 m/min.

The sheeter for Pyroll is fitted with one rotary unwinding station with automatic splicing that enables it to operate at full speed without deceleration. Pallet change is performed at full speed and since the machine is highly automated, format changes can be completed in a very short time.

With this new acquisition the Pyroll Converting Group once again places its trust in Pasaban’s technology for the manufacture of its paper converting equipment.

“We have a long-term partnership with Pasaban, and we have bought several paper converting equipment from them in past few years. The latest investment with KB2300 Pasaban sheeter in Siltakyla will fulfil the requirements of our customers in terms of quality and capacity.”

Cellwood Machinery AB to supply rebuild of PM1 Couch- and Press Pulper at Arctic Paper Kostrzyn Mill.

The rebuild is a part of a capacity increase project and after the rebuild, these Pulpers will be able to handle 580 TPD.

Arctic Paper Kostrzyn S.A. is the largest manufacturer of offset papers in Poland and the second largest manufacturer of graphical papers.

Annually, Arctic Paper Group, deliver over 700,000 tonnes of premium graphic paper – for quality printing, reading and branding purposes – produced by more than 1,250 dedicated employees at three mills and distributed by 14 sales offices.

The delivery will take place in the summer of 2019.

Valmet has today, on February 27, 2019, published its Annual Report for 2018 on the company’s website at www.valmet.com/annualreport2018. The Annual Report consists of three separate parts : the Annual Review, the Financial Statements and the GRI Supplement. The GRI Supplement is available in English only.

Wepa to take over Greenfield ?

The German competition authorities (Bundeskartellamt – Federal Cartel Office) have received an application from Wepa Group for the take-over of the French facility Greenfield (Arjowiggins Group), placed in receivership in early January. This Mill based in Château-Thierry (some 100 km East from Paris) produces some 150,000 tpy of deinked pulp. The decision from the Commercial Court in France is expected by the end of February-beginning of March. Wepa already operates 2 paper mills dedicated to tissue in France (Lille and Troyes, the latter being quite close to the Greenfield location).

Valmet revises upwards its net sales guidance for 2019 due to the acquisition of GL&V

Valmet announced the acquisition of GL&V, a global provider of technology and services to the pulp and paper industry, by press release on February 26, 2019. Following the acquisition, Valmet revises upwards its net sales guidance for 2019. The new guidance is subject to the completion of the acquisition, which is estimated to take place on April 1, 2019 at the earliest.

New guidance for 2019 :

Valmet estimates that net sales in 2019 will increase in comparison with 2018 (EUR 3,325 million) and Comparable EBITA in 2019 will increase in comparison with 2018 (EUR 257 million). The guidance is subject to the completion of the acquisition of GL&V.
