Valmet maintains its position among the world's sustainability leaders

Valmet has been included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) for the fifth consecutive year and thus maintains its position among the world’s sustainability leaders. Valmet was listed both in the Dow Jones Sustainability World and Europe indices.

The annual evaluation conducted by a Swiss investment specialist RobecoSAM comprehensively reviews the companies’ performance with regard to social, environmental and financial factors. This year in total 317 companies are included in the DJSI World for 2018-2019.

Stora Enso the first in the forest industry to utilise augmented reality and 5G technology in mill maintenance

Stora Enso has been developing augmented reality (AR) and 5G technology solutions together with Telia. The utilisation of augmented reality was first tested at Stora Enso’s Oulu mill where real-time information is being used in mill maintenance. 

The application of augmented reality and virtual models will in the future enable the more rapid use of, for example, maintenance information at Stora Enso mills. Using a virtual model of a machine and real-time data concerning information points, can improve the operational reliability of the mills.

“Stora Enso has an extensive digitalisation programme, which aims to increase sales and boost our operations on our journey to replace fossil-based materials. Through our digitalisation programme, we have become pioneers in our industry in the utilisation of new technology,” says Teemu Salmi, Stora Enso’s CIO and Head of Digitalisation.

Through the new technology, all necessary information is easily and visually at the disposal of experts in real-time, regardless of physical location. The nearing introduction of fast 5G technology together with AR- and VR technology and 360° views will enable real-time and rapid utilisation by experts between different units, irrespective of geographical distance.

”With our pilots in Oulu, we have explored the area where IoT (Internet of Things) and 5G solutions will most likely produce the first breakthroughs in introducing new, more effective processes. Valmet to deliver the world's first BioTracTM Steam Explosion System for black pellet production in France


Valmet has agreed with FICAP on the delivery of the world’s first continuous steam explosion system, BioTrac, for production of black pellets1. The black pellet plant will be part of an existing large industrial area, located in the Region of Champagne-Ardenne in France. The integration of the BioTrac system and plant will be conducted by De Smet Engineers and Contractors (DSEC) of Belgium.

The order is included in Valmet’s second quarter of 2018 orders received. The value of the order will not be disclosed. The start-up of the black pellet production plant is planned for 2020.

The pellet plant will produce both white and black pellets and has an annual capacity of 120 000 ton/year of pellets. The black pellets produced will be used mainly by district heating network operators and coal fired power plants as a substitute to fossil fuels. This project will therefore contribute to the phase out from fossil fuels and enable the production of 100% renewable energy.

"FICAP is our first industrial project, a concrete showcase of our know-how and mastery of biomass industrialization processes and technology, responding to a promising emerging market of the HPCI® Black Pellet. Its success will allow the global roll-out of a new biofuel industrial sector in France, Europe and the rest of the world," says Jean Baptiste Marin, CEO of Européenne de Biomasse.

"Valmet has since 2013 focused on the commercialization of the BioTrac process and we are very happy to finally see the first project to be realized. This is the first of its kind of a continuous steam explosion system for this application. We see a great future in this end product and process. Consultation phase Digital Solutions Cham

The site of the former Cham Paper Group will be converted to an urban district from autumn 2019 onwards. Due to the rental agreement expiring, Sappi Europe will have to leave the Cham site no later than the end of June 2019.

In recent months Sappi’s management has compiled and reviewed various relocation options within Switzerland and abroad. Considering Sappi does not have a production site in Switzerland, the best solution appears to be to integrate the converting companies, the solution center, the supply chain and customer service into existing Sappi Europe facilities.

These measures would lead to a reduction of about 25 full-time positions in Cham. The employees have been informed, and the legal consultation process has been initiated. Redundancies are expected to take place from February 2019 at the earliest.

A social plan will be negotiated between management and employees.

Pratt Industries’ new mill will feature a highly efficient Voith BlueLine stock preparation system


Customer receives high level of operational support and service through one-system supplier for all stock preparation equipment 

Construction is well under way of Pratt Industries new Wapakoneta, Ohio, corrugated packaging mill, which includes a customized BlueLine stock preparation system from Voith. The stock preparation system is designed to handle approximately 425,000 tons of recycled fiber each year when the mill begins operation, planned for the second half of 2019.

As the stock preparation supplier, Voith will provide Pratt Industries with all elements of the system, including reliable material handling with automatic wire cutting, reject compactors, sludge handling, water clarification and effluent treatment. These elements are similar to a previous stock preparation system installation by Voith at the Pratt Industries mill in Valparaiso, Indiana.

“Pratt was very pleased with the Valparaiso installation and the equipment performance there. With those successes, as well as the service and aftermarket support we provide, Pratt was interested in working with us again at Wapakoneta,” said Michael Hmielewski, Vice President of Project Sales, Stock Preparation, Voith Paper North America. “Now we are working beside them to continuously enhance our services based on the raw material quality fluctuations.”

Ozone reactive flotation of model contaminants contained in recovered papers

Alexandre Herisson defended his doctoral thesis at University Grenoble Alpes prepared under the supervision of the Professor Marc Aurousseau and the co-supervision of Nathalie Marlin, Associate Professor (Grenoble INP-Pagora / LGP2). He presented the results of his research work entitled Ozone reactive flotation of model contaminants contained in recovered papers : hydrodynamics and reactivity study.
The decrease of the recovered paper collection quality and the accumulation of dissolved substances in process water affect the deinking line efficiency and contaminate more and more the liquid effluents. In this context the LGP2 has developed an innovative deinking process, the ozone reactive flotation, to chemically degrade dissolved pollutants in parallel with ink removal.
To better understand the mechanisms involved, air and ozone/oxygen flotation trials have been conducted on three model contaminants selected in a preliminary bibliographic review, in a two-phase gas/liquid system, in the absence of fibers. Experiments have been carried out on two instrumented laboratory pilots : a bubble column operating only with air for the study of the hydrodynamics of the reactor (bubbles size and distribution, gas hold-up) in the presence of dissolved contaminants, and a second one, similar in its conception but built using materials resistant to corrosive gas, dedicated to the study of the oxidation reactions with ozone.
The evaluation of the hydrodynamics related to gas flow and injection system selected, studied with air but supposed to be the same with ozone/oxygen gas mixture, shows that the bubble size, with or without contaminants, is optimal for an efficient flotation process. The study of ozone mass transfer and reactivity with the three model contaminants, for several temperatures and ozone concentrations, leads to the calculation of kinetic constants and shows that the contaminants, depending on their nature, have been oxidized or depolymerized. Although the COD of the treated solutions does not decrease a lot after the ozone reactive flotation, the effluent quality has been improved in terms of biodegradability since contaminants are partially degraded.

BillerudKorsnäs has opened up one of Europe's largest and most efficient MG paper machines

Today, BillerudKorsnäs has opened one of Europe’s largest and most efficient MG paper machines at Skärblacka production unit outside Norrköping in Sweden. The opening ceremony was held by BillerudKorsnäs President and CEO Petra Einarsson, retiring Governor of Östergötland County Elisabeth Nilsson, acceding Governor of Östergötland County Carl Fredrik Graf and Factory Manager of Skärblacka Production Plant Håkan Krantz. More than 500 people attended the ceremony at the Trozelli Gallery in Norrköping.

The investment of approximately SEK 1.3 billion, partly in an upgraded existing paper machine and partly in a new machine for machine glazed kraft paper (MG paper), is part of BillerudKorsnäs venture to create a world-leading MG center in Skärblacka. The investment enhances BillerudKorsnäs product mix, lays the foundation for a broader product portfolio with higher value added and demonstrates that the company strengthens its leading position as global supplier of kraft paper for packaging purposes.

The applications for machine glazed kraft paper range from consumer goods to industrial products such as fat-resistant paper for consumer bags and fast food markets, barrier paper for dairy products such as butter packaging and paper for sealing medical disposable items.

Both the new MG machine and the capacity enhancement of existing machines opens new as well as enables growth in attractive market segments, while at the same time the investment as a whole provides a solid foundation for further development of Skärblacka as a world-leading MG center.

Hygienic Tissue Mills fired up a new TT WIND-P tissue rewinder supplied by Toscotec, in South Africa.


On July 27, Hygienic Tissue Mills started up a Toscotec-supplied TT WIND-P tissue rewinder at its Pietermaritzburg mill, in eastern South Africa. This is a repeated order for Toscotec, following the supply of a MODULO-PLUS tissue machine, PM2, in 2017. The TT WIND-P slitter rewinder serves PM2, processing 100% virgin pulp and recycled paper parent rolls.

The TT WIND-P slitter rewinder features 2 unwind stands and handles parent rolls of 2750 mm sheet trim and 2500 mm diameter, with a design speed of 1500 mpm. The pneumatically loaded slitting system has a minimum width of 150 mm. Toscotec supplied the complete electrification and control system, and the sectional drive system. The scope of supply also included the erection supervision, commissioning, start-up assistance, and on-site training.

Toscotec Start-up & Service Engineer David Ponte commented, “It was one of the fastest commissioning I have seen for a rewinder. The TT WIND reached its maximum speed in record time with a final product that was already sellable. Thanks to the great cooperation of Hygienic Tissue’s team, we completed fine tuning in two days with the machine running at top speed”.

Solenis Acquires Pulp and Paper Chemical Distribution Business in Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines and Malaysia from Connell Brothers

Solenis has completed the acquisition of the pulp and paper chemical distribution business from Connell Bros. Co. (CBC) in Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia and Vietnam.

All assets and business associated with the Solenis pulp and paper business represented by CBC in these countries are part of the deal, including inventory, accounts and field equipment. Additionally, CBC sales and technical personnel will be invited to transfer to Solenis, continuing the operation of the business.

"Southeast Asia is now a fast-growing pulp and papermaking territory and represents a significant growth opportunity for Solenis,” said John Panichella, president and CEO. "We have worked in close collaboration with the Connell Brothers Southeast Asia team for a number of years, so this is a logical next step in our desire to provide total solutions to our customers in this market.”

BIR keeps up momentum towards UN recognition of Global Recycling Day Side event with UNIDO at Basel Convention gathering

The Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) today stepped up their efforts to have Global Recycling Day recognized as an official United Nations day.

During a side event organized by BIR in the framework of the 11th meeting of the Open-ended Working Group of the Basel Convention (OEWG) in Geneva, BIR and UNIDO emphasized the need to celebrate the importance recycling plays in preserving our precious primary resources.

Following up on their joint declaration signed in June 2018 with a view to facilitating closer bilateral cooperation, both organizations called for concrete actions to ensure Global Recycling Day, launched by BIR on 18 March 2018, gains official UN recognition.

“We are delighted to be working with UNIDO in our efforts to have Global Recycling Day recognized as an official UN day,” said BIR President Ranjit S. Baxi. “We are determined, in collaboration with UNIDO, to build on the momentum we’ve sparked since launching Global Recycling Day in March”

The inaugural event on 18 March 2018 was a day of action aimed at garnering support for recycling across the world from leaders, policy makers, businesses, communities and individuals.

Mr Baxi noted that recycling provides important raw materials to support the growing demand of industry, generates employment for 3 million worldwide and is forecast to add over $US400 billion to global GDP by 2025.

In the coming weeks, BIR will be officially launching the Global Recycling Foundation as the parent organisation for Global Recycling Day.

Speaking at the side event were also Frank Van Rompaey, Head of UNIDO’s Geneva office, and Katharina Kummer Peiry of Kummer EcoConsult and former Executive Secretary of the Basel Convention.

BIR is the largest international recycling federation in the world. Its mission is to promote materials recycling and facilitate free and fair trade of recyclables in a sustainable and competitive world economy.

A major ambition for Chef de Baie in La Rochelle

On June 29, Bolloré Ports La Rochelle signed a terminal agreement to operate the future Chef de Baie 4 terminal with the Atlantic Port La Rochelle. A long-term project to build a major port platform on the Atlantic coast.

Bolloré Ports is already in charge of handling positions 1 to 3 at Chef de Baie and operating this new terminal will enable Bolloré Ports to improve and consolidate its activities in the port of La Rochelle.
Following on from the major investments made to develop grain exports, the aim is to create a multi-modal hub (road, rail and sea) at the Chef de Baie terminal dedicated to distributing paper pulp and increasing container, conventional and heavy parcel traffic.
The signing of this terminal agreement, for a 35-year operating period, reinforces the collaboration between Bolloré Ports and the Atlantic Port La Rochelle.
Together, they will define the technical specifications of the dock and the platform and then launch the tender for the work.
The Chef de Baie terminal is continuing to develop after commissioning the new Soufflet Group Socomac grain silo in June. Located quayside, this grain silo, with an additional storage capacity of 63,000 tons, is connected to Bolloré Ports La Rochelle’s loading gantry and is at the cutting edge technically in terms of loading rate and dust management, in order to meet environmental requirements.

By late September, the sandpit activity of Cetramaris (merger of Cetra Granulats and Sablimaris) will be relocated to the Anse Saint-Marc site and will be fully operational.
These developments represent €70 million in investments for Bolloré Ports and the Atlantic Port La Rochelle. They will allow for a significant increase in activity and traffic, which is estimated at one million tons in 15 years after the commissioning of the Chef de Baie Terminal scheduled for 2022. “The Bolloré Group supports the development strategy of La Rochelle’s main port and is aware of its potential to reclaim its market shares of French ports”, declares Philippe Labonne, CEO of Bolloré Ports.

Resolute to Sell Fairmont, West Virginia, Recycled Pulp Mill

Resolute Forest Products Inc. today announced that it has entered into a definitive asset purchase agreement with ND Paper LLC, a subsidiary of Nine Dragons Paper Limited, for the sale of its Fairmont, West Virginia, recycled bleached kraft pulp mill, for $55 million plus certain elements of working capital, payable in cash.

Nine Dragons is primarily engaged in the production and sale of a broad variety of packaging paperboard products, including linerboard, high-performance corrugating medium, coated duplex board, as well as recycled printing and writing paper and specialty paper. In addition to nine paper mills operating in Asia, Nine Dragons, through its wholly-owned subsidiary ND Paper, also operates two U.S.-based facilities in Wisconsin and Maine.

ND Paper has agreed to offer employment to Fairmont mill employees, effective upon closing of the transaction, which is expected within the next two months. 

"We are proud of the progress we have made together with the mill employees over the years to improve the Fairmont operation," said Yves Laflamme, president and chief executive officer of Resolute. "We are pleased that the local community and broader region of the state will continue to benefit from the economic and social impact of the mill’s operation."

"Proceeds from this asset sale will enable us to further increase liquidity, and continue to improve our balance sheet and financial flexibility," added Laflamme. "Over the coming days, we will communicate with our customers to discuss the transition of supply as we seek to optimize our recycled bleached kraft pulp business at our Menominee, Michigan facility."

Global Hygiene : civil works to start in Charavines

Civil works will start in September in Charavines, near Grenoble (South-East of France), explains Luc Brami, President of Global Hygiene. In November 2015, Global Hygiene and Arjowiggins entered into exclusive talks, following Arjowiggins decision to stop graphic paper production at this site.
These discussions have finally come to a conclusion on August 28. Global Hygiene Group is now the owner of the site and is able to invest 20 M€ to build a new facility and to install the new Tissue Machine.
This TM will have a capacity of 32,000 tpy of paper using recycled and virgin fibers. Its trim width will be 2.80 m.
Start-up of the mill is planned in 2020. Some 35 jobs will be created within the next 18 months. This production will fully feed Global Hygiene’s converting capacities. In the medium term, a converting factory could also be build in Charavines. In 2017, Global Hygiene Group’ TO was 45 M€. The Group employs some 130 people in 2 factories in France.

Ahlstrom-Munksjö strengthens its capability to serve the South American market by investing EUR 21 million

Ahlstrom-Munksjö will invest EUR 21 million in its Coated Specialties business to improve capabilities and flexibility at its Jacarei plant in Brazil and better serve customers in South America with a broader offering.

The project is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2019, and will expand the site’s capabilities of coating and calendering on the paper machine. It will allow Ahlstrom-Munksjö to offer more efficient, high-quality on-line coated products to its customer in the areas of self-adhesive and wet glue labeling, flexible packaging and sublimation printing. Demand growth for high value-added coated specialty papers has been robust in the region during past years.

The upgrade of the production line will also improve the company’s flexibility to deliver a wider range of product trims, better matching the needs of its customers. Additionally, it will open up further innovation opportunities in existing and new product areas. The benefit of the investment includes an improved product mix and increased production efficiency.

“The investment shows our long-term commitment to the South American market and our ambition to maintain a leading position in coated specialty papers. This allows us to better serve our customers, continuing to grow with them by developing sustainable and value added fiber-based solutions,” says Daniele Borlatto, Executive Vice President, Industrial Solutions.

“The project represents the latest step in the journey to reinforce our position in Brazil” says Valmir Piton, Vice President, Coated Specialties, and Country Manager, Brazil. In April, Ahlstrom-Munksjö agreed to acquire MD Papéis’ Caieiras specialty paper mill, located in the vicinity of Jacareì, in the Sao Paulo area. Following the acquisition, Ahlstrom-Munksjö’s presence in Brazil will comprise three operating plants, all near Sao Paolo, employing over 700 persons and with revenues of approximately of EUR 200 million.

Coated Specialties business is part of the Industrial Solutions business area, producing a wide range of products and materials often used in manufacturing and production processes, such as abrasive backings, electrotechnical insulation papers, coated label and flexible packaging papers, release liners and specialty pulp.

Celupaper S.A. boosts production with a new Toscotec-supplied MODULO-PLUS in Argentina.

Toscotec will supply a new MODULO-PLUS tissue line to Celupaper S.A. of the leading South American group Grupo Vual, based in Argentina. The MODULO-PLUS machine - PM5 - is scheduled for delivery in autumn 2019 and it will be installed at Papelera Nicaragua mill.
The MODULO-PLUS has a daily production of 65 tpd and is equipped with TT SuctionPressRoll, TT SYD-3200MM and TT Milltech-MGYH Multigen hoods. The scope of supply also includes the approach flow system, the steam and condensate system and the machine and distribution control system.
PM5 is the fourth repeated order awarded by Celupaper to Toscotec in 4 years. The Italian manufacturer had previously supplied a major rebuild on PM2 in 2015, then a MODULO machine - PM3 - in 2016 and finally PM4, a MODULO-PLUS line, which started up in mid-July 2018.
Toscotec’s Area Sales Manager Gabriele Romanini said, “The fact that Celupaper chose to work again with us on their PM5 project is an exciting challenge to exceed their expectations on productivity and energy reduction. Our TT DOES (Drying Optimization for Energy Saving) package, in combination with our Multigen Hood in cogeneration mode, is the core of this effort. We are currently working on the engineering, where the design of our system will integrate into the mill’s cogeneration plant with a gas turbine. Back in 2011, our Energy and Environment department won the PPI Efficiency Improvements of the Year Award with the Spanish producer L.C. Paper 1881 SA, for the effective integration of the tissue machine’s hood system with the cogeneration facility. Drawing on that experience, we expect to achieve substantial energy recovery and very interesting cuts on the machine operating costs”.

DS Smith awarded two ScanStars

ScanStar is a joint Nordic packaging competition which is held annually and it rewards the best packaging solutions in Northern Europe. This time eight solutions were awarded, of which 2 were given to DS Smith. One to Finland, one to Sweden.

The Finnish awarded packaging solution was a transport packaging for beverages designed for Refresco Finland Oy.

The challenge was to create a new transport packaging for TetraPak beverages. One requirement was the need to be able to pack manually, use less material, but made of recyclable fibers and must be recyclable, and it needed to protect the caps during transportation.

DS Smith created a solution which answers to all of these needs – and even more ! The transport packaging created for Refresco Finland Oy is made of fully recycled and fully recyclable material and it has been used as litel fibre as possible. The design of the transport packaging is based on CHEP pallets and is easy to use in retail warehouses and then ready for retail shop floor without re-palletizing. The whole packaging is tied to the pallet with locks so there is no movement during transportation and it is safe to handle. The new structure protects plastic caps and keep packaging stable during transportation meaning fewer damaged products and increased customer satisfaction. The solution is designed to let the primary packaging be seen on the shop floor which helps to increase sales as well.

The other awarded DS Smith designed solution comes from Sweden. This smart packaging solution has been designed for the growing eCommerce sector and it is called 2Way. The inside-out packaging solution is for product shipment and returns. It can be printed according to the need to support the brand or even to be used as a gift box. The clever one-piece corrugated board structure can be folded both ways effortlessly. Being a single piece, it is simple to assemble and it is flat when stored. In summary the benefits of 2Way are :

BillerudKorsnäs announced today that Mikael Andersson is appointed Senior Vice President for Board, one of the company’s three divisions in the new organisation. The new organisation takes effect on the 1st of October.

Earlier this year, BillerudKorsnäs announced that the company will create three divisions with full profit and loss responsibility in order to more effectively realise the company’s growth strategy. The three divisions will be Board, Paper and Solutions.

Mikael Andersson, today Senior Vice President for the current business area Corrugated Solutions, is appointed Senior Vice President Board. Corrugated Solutions will when the new organisation takes effect be split and the parts integrated in respectively Board and Solutions. Mikael Andersson will be, and is already today, part of the company’s senior management team.

Mikael will take up his new position on October 1st, when the new organisation takes effect. The other two divisions´ Senior Vice Presidents are expected to be appointed within short.

ANDRITZ offers bromine-enhanced mercury oxidation for emission reduction in European power plants


ANDRITZ has signed an agreement with VOSTEEN Consulting, based in Cologne, Germany, for exclusive sale of proven mercury reduction technologies to be used in fossil fuel-based power plants in Europe.

Based on the so-called BREF (Best Available Techniques Reference Document) regulations of the European Union, harmful emissions (e.g. nitrogen oxide, mercury, etc.) from fossil fuel-based power plants must be reduced as from 2021. As a consequence, many European power plants now have to be upgraded in order to comply with this new regulation.

As one of the world’s leading suppliers of flue gas cleaning technologies, ANDRITZ is now able to offer its customers tailor-made, highly economically attractive technologies that enable to fulfill the required mercury emission limits.

Six finalists for Metsä Board at the 2018 European Carton Excellence Award


Pro Carton and ECMA have recently revealed the finalists for the European Carton Excellence Award 2018, with six out of 36 finalists produced from Metsä Board’s paperboards. Each of these finalist cartons were submitted by Metsä Board customers into the following categories : Frozen & Chilled Foods, Fast/Convenience Foods, Dry Foods & Beverages, Confectionery, Healthcare & Pharmaceuticals and Non-Food.
